Instead, I'm always able to upload new sketches whether the output cable was plugged in or not. I understand that unplugging the output plug and powering up should put me in Program Mode, and (with the single-mode CW sketch) plugging in a TRS jack should short Ring2 to Sleeve/ground and then booting up should start with Operate Mode, but so far that's giving me trouble.

I think it has to do with Program Mode vs Operate Mode. I tried several client programs, but none are happy with the initial handshake. Now I'm having trouble connecting using the WinKey protocol. I can upload sketches at will, which is a big improvement! I'm using the sketch checked into K3NG on Github. The new Nano is installed, and I was even able to desolder and reinstall the SP kit. Larry et al, I'm pretty sure the busted pins was my doing the first time I plugged the cable in, there was more resistance than I expected and I gave it a little extra oomph, which in hindsight was the wrong answer.

Once you have verified you have installed the correct driver and nothing seems to be amiss with the cable let us know. If you have another cable, please try it. Also look at the pins in your connecting cable. I have seen this happen on a couple of Nanos. Also, if you have a good magnifying glass, look into the Mortty miniUSB connector and see if one or more of the four connector "pins" has been pushed back. There is also a link to a program called "USBtreeview" which may be helpful in investigating USB connection issues.

Was this the Windows driver for the CH340 USB to serial converter IC called "CH341SER.EXE"? If there is any question about installing the correct driver, I have placed a copy in the Files section of this group along with a link to a tutorial on installing the driver.
